Saints alive, but Smith wants more
January 26, 2002

Northampton may have strung together seven wins out of eight outings over the last two months, but coach Wayne Smith is still not satisfied.

Their 24-16 win over Harlequins puts them sixth in the Zurich Premiership table, but Smith said afterwards: "We are still not good enough to be thinking that we can challenge at the top end of the league.

"It is good that we won but there is still a long way to go. We have got to keep working hard."

Paul Burke gave Quins the lead with two penalties to Northampton's one, but it was the visitors who were the first to overcome the tricky conditions and score a try.

Tom Smith was on top form as usual and after a clever break by James Brookes, the Saints forwards helped Smith scramble his way over the home line. Paul Grayson converted to put Northampton four points in front.

Quins kept up the pressure with another Burke penalty, but again Northampton stretched their lead in the second half with a Ben Cohen
touchdown.

Quins responded immediately with their only try of the afternoon. Scrum-half Nick Duncombe had created space upfield but was brought down. The ball was recycled and switched to the left wing for Chris Bell to break loose and score, Burke adding the conversion. However, two penalties and one drop goal in the last 20 minutes from Grayson brought Quins' charge to a halt.

Harlequins director of rugby John Kingston gave England boss Clive Woodward a welcome boost with the news that he thinks backs duo Dan
Luger and Will Greenwood could be fit for selection for next weekend's Six Nations clash against Scotland.

Both players missed Saturday's match for Quins but according to Kingston they have a realistic chance of getting back in action. But Ireland boss Eddie O'Sullivan is likely to have to do without skipper Keith Wood for his team's game against Wales because of a continuing calf injury.
