Bristol prop banned for six weeks
February 26, 2002

Bristol prop Darren Crompton will miss three Premiership games after being suspended for six weeks for stamping on England lock Simon Shaw.

Crompton was sent off for the offence during the Shoguns' encounter with Wasps at Loftus Road earlier this month.

The incident was considered by a Rugby Football Union panel chaired by disciplinary officer Robert Horner. He was assisted by council members Paul Murphy (Oxfordshire) and Group Captain Nigel Gillingham (Royal Air Force).

Crompton's ban could prove a huge blow to the club as they look to consolidate a place in the Premiership's top six and secure an end-of-season play-off spot.

Coach Dean Ryan said: "We felt that there was no intent in the incident and I think that the panel reflected that in the length of the ban as the norm is 84 days.

"The six-week ban is still a bit of a hard thing to take for both Darren and the club and we will have to learn to cope without his services during that time."

Bristol's Argentinian international fly-half Felipe Contepomi had his appeal against a yellow card in the same game rescinded by the same panel.
