No new contract for Rassie
February 27, 2002

Injured Springbok and Cats flank Rassie Erasmus' move to Zurich Premiership side London Irish has moved one step closer with denials from SA Rugby that he has been offered a new contract.

Reports at the weekend that Erasmus had been offered a new contract by SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd have been denied and his current contract will run out on 30 April 2002.

Erasmus, 29, is still recovering from foot surgery and does not expect to return to action with the Cats until next month.

In terms of the injury clause in his 2001 SA Rugby contract he is to receive payment for a period of 180 days following his injury, that occured in October last year.

The matter has been discussed and agreed with the player and his agent, Frikkie Erasmus, and has been confirmed in writing to both parties. The injury clause is applied in all cases where contracted Springboks are injured.

Erasmus, capped 36 times by the Springboks and who made his Test debut against the Lions in 1997, is due to join Irish on July 1 for pre-season training after agreeing a two-year contract.

However, Erasmus will not link up with Irish if he returns to the Springbok side before the Test against Wales on June 8.
