Mallinder impressed by Gloucester
March 9, 2002

Sale coach Jim Mallinder admitted his side had been completely outplayed after crashing to a 42-14 defeat at Sale.

The Cherry and Whites eased to victory in the Zurich Premiership encounter at Kingsholm and but for some attacking errors the Sharks' hammering could have been even worse.

Junior Paramore, Andy Gomarsall and James Simpson-Daniel all crossed in the first half as the home side took a firm grip on the game. Further tries from James Forrester and Federico Pucciariello after the break settled the points.

Mallinder said: "They overpowered us. We were outgunned.

"Gloucester's pack played very well and I was most impressed with their performance."

Gloucester's new director of Rugby Nigel Melville was equally impressed by the performance of his new charges.

Melville, who was appointed earlier this week but does not expect to take an active role in coaching until after the game with Wasps next month, watched the game from a hospitality box.

He said: "I was very impressed. The forwards built up a very good platform and the backs also did well."

Backs coach Paul Turner, who was in charge of team affairs, said: "I was very pleased. We tried a number of changes and the boys expressed themselves better than any time I have seen this season.

"I was concerned about the five or six chances that we should have taken but didn't. We have a very good squad here but we need to maximise the potential that many players have."
