Quins suffer double injury blow
March 12, 2002

Harlequins have suffered a double injury setback in their quest for Zurich Premiership survival.

Quins' English international flanker Pat Sanderson will not play again this season, while full-back David Slemen has been ruled out of next Saturday's crucial home clash against Newcastle, forcing the club to recall Ben Gollings from England Sevens duty.

Both players were hurt during the Powergen Cup semi-final defeat by London Irish three days ago.

Sanderson damaged knee ligaments late in the cup-tie and will miss bottom club Quins' six remaining league fixtures.

Slemen, meanwhile, was concussed when he attempted to tackle Irish wing Paul Sackey and must now serve the mandatory 21-day rest period.

There could be some brighter news on the horizon though, with Ireland captain Keith Wood possibly set for a comeback against Newcastle.

The Quins hooker has been sidelined because of a calf muscle injury since mid-December, and a decision on his fitness will be made later this week.

Quins are currently five points adrift at the Premiership basement, having lost their last eight league games.

Four of Quins' remaining six matches are away from home - against Bristol, Irish, Wasps and Sale - with Newcastle and Leeds to come at The Stoop.
