Wood slams Zurich cock-up
March 22, 2002

Harlequins captain Keith Wood is "livid" after his side were dumped to the bottom of the Zurich Premiership following confusion over rules.

The Premiership issued a statement on Thursday clarifying the rules governing what happens if a two or more teams are tied on points.

In the event of a tie league position is dictated by the number of wins achieved, rather than by points difference as had previously been thought.

The result is that Harlequins, who had apparently leapfrogged Leeds last week after beating Newcastle, are again at the bottom, in the relegation position, while Bristol drop below Saracens.

So Harlequins, level on 27 points with Leeds, drop to 12th as they have won only four games compared with Leeds' six. Bristol and Saracens have 32 points apiece but Saracens have won seven matches, Bristol only six.

Wood told BBC 2's Rugby Special: "I'm livid. I woke up of this morning and Harlequins were one off the bottom. Now we're at the bottom of the table again.

"The problem is that if the season finished this morning Leeds would be relegated. If it finished tonight Quins would be relegated.

"That can't be right. Last week we actively went for a bonus point to get ourselves outside the drop out zone. It effects Bristol, Saracens and perhaps Bath. It's a mental kick in the teeth."
