Magne set for summer move to England
April 7, 2002

French superstar Olivier Magne celebrated his third Grand Slam triumph in Paris - then announced he intends to quit his homeland for England in the summer.

The brilliant back-row has been the cornerstone of a superb French campaign which ended in glory against Ireland.

Long regarded as one of the best players in the world, Magne, along with lock Fabien Pelous, became the first Frenchman to win three clean sweeps, following successive triumphs in 1997 and 1998.

Fitness permitting, the 28-year-old will be an integral part of Bernard Laporte's World Cup plans next year, by which time he intends to be plying his trade in the Premiership.

"My contract ends at the end of this season and I have had a few offers from England," he confirmed.

"I don't want to make any announcement until a deal has been done, but it is likely I will move in the summer."

The capture of Magne would be an attractive proposition for virtually every top-flight side, with the possible exception of Leicester, who already have Neil Back, Josh Kronfeld and Lewis Moody at their disposal.

Bath are likely suitors, providing they avoid the dreaded drop, while Gloucester will also look to build on an impressive season.

Meanwhile, Magne will see out the season with Montferrand, safe in the knowledge that his reputation has been enhanced by another lung-busting effort to which Ireland simply had no answer.
