Richards and Wheeler set new goal
June 24, 2002

Leicester Tigers director of rugby Dean Richards and the clubs chief executive Peter Wheeler are set to join a team of fellow climbers to drive 1900 miles and climb four mountains in just 48 hours with the Zurich Premiership Plate, all for charity.

Not content with winning the Zurich Premiership and the Heineken Cup this season, Richards, aged 38, and his Leicester Tigers Zurich Climbers team of Leicester Tigers Chief Executive Peter Wheeler, 53, and Tigers fans John Foss, 57, and Steve Killigrew, 44, will climb Ben Nevis in Scotland, Helvellyn in England, Snowdon in Wales and Carantouhill in Ireland, in just 48 hours.

The Leicester Tigers Zurich Climbers are taking part in The Wooden Spoon Society Vauxhall Four Peaks Challenge from 4 to 6 July, and hope to raise more than £30,000 for The Wooden Spoon Society, a charity helping disabled and disadvantaged children. Zurich, sponsor of the Premiership, have confirmed they will be supporting the team, pledging £15,000 - approximately £1 for every foot climbed by the team.

The team will compete alongside 50 other teams, all of whom have been training hard for the physically demanding task ahead, where competitors must run up and down the four mountains to succeed. In the past five years the event has raised around £2 million for Wooden Spoon projects.

Dean's team will have the extra challenge of carrying the Zurich Premiership plate to the top of each mountain where it will be photographed alongside a special "mountain conquered" flag at each location.

Dean Richards said: "This is a fantastic challenge for me - trying desperately to keep ahead of the new slimline Peter Wheeler as we trek up mountain after mountain. I just hope my dodgy knee holds out! It's all for a very good cause though, raising money for the Wooden Spoon Society which helps out thousands of disadvantaged children each year. We need you all to dig deep and give generously, as every penny counts - we're very grateful to Zurich for their superb sponsorship."

Tigers winger Steve Booth, added: "I think Dean and Peter are completely mad to do this - I don't mind tackling 20-stone forwards but you wouldn't catch me doing anything this crazy. Seriously, it's all for a fantastic cause and I wish them all the best - they'll need it!"
