England stars miss out on sevens
June 25, 2002

England sevens coach Joe Lydon could have turned to some of the country's more established senior internationals for the Commonwealth Games.

Instead he has rewarded the majority of the squad that finished third in the IRB World Series.

The 20-man provisional party includes several members of the side which won the Hong Kong Sevens earlier this year, as well as a handful of fully-capped internationals.

Captain Phil Greening is the most experienced of the group, but there are also places for Geoff Appleford and Ben Johnston who both played against Argentina last week.

Lydon said: "I'm pleased with quality and strength of the squad. It contains 11 full England internationals but, just as importantly, a wide range of players who have worked with the coaching team this season during the IRB World Sevens Series.

"Many players have contributed to the success we have achieved this year and helped us to attain a place within the top three world rankings. All justify their selection to the squad and the potential opportunity to play in the Commonwealth Games."

The squad will attend a training camp in Ireland during the first week of July, followed by a second week of preparation in Bolton and Manchester. The final 12-man party will be announced on July 15.

Provisional squad: Simon Amor (Cambridge University), Geoff Appleford (London Irish), Neil Baxter (Salford City Reds), Nick Duncombe (Harlequins), Harry Ellis (Leicester), Russell Earnshaw (Rotherham), Ben Gollings (Harelquins), Phil Greening (Wasps), Richard Haughton (Saracens), Ben Johnston (Saracens), Josh Lewsey (Wasps), Jamie Noon (Newcastle), Henry Paul (Gloucester), Tony Roques (Saracens), Pat Sanderson (Harlequins), Paul Sampson (Wasps), James Simpson-Daniel (Gloucester), Michael Stephenson (Newcastle), Rob Thirlby (Bath), Fraser Waters (Wasps).
