Callard join Leeds Tykes coaching set-up
June 27, 2002

Last season's Zurich Premiership bottom club Leeds Tykes hace acquired the coaching services of former Bath coach Jon Callard.

Callard has been out of the game since he parted company with the West Country giants in March.

The 36-year-old will work as assistant to director of rugby Phil Davies and will primarily work on back play and kicking strategy.

The Premiership side have been looking for a new coach since the retirement of Steve Bachop at the end of last season.

Davies said: "I am delighted to have attracted a coach of Jon's calibre to the club. This is a role I have wanted to create for a number of years, with a full-time first-team coach to assist me with the team.

"Jon's wife is from Harrogate so he is looking forward to moving up to Yorkshire and I am looking forward to working with him."

Callard won five caps for England and enjoyed a trophy-laden playing career at the Recreation Ground before moving into coaching.

He first worked as assistant to Andy Robinson while continuing to play, before taking full control in July 2000.

Callard said: "I am delighted to be joining Leeds. Phil Davies is a person I have a huge amount of respect for and I am looking forward to working with him.

"Leeds have impressed me with their honesty and integrity with a realistic vision for the future. After a good first season it is an exciting opportunity to be part of taking the club to the next level."
