Wasps make approach for Howley
July 1, 2002

Zurich Premiership side London Wasps have approached Cardiff about securing the services of scrum-half Rob Howley.

Howley, 31, has a year to run on his current contract but it is thought that the financially strained Welsh club could be tempted to allow him to go for a transfer fee.

They also have rising international Ryan Powell waiting in the wings.

Cardiff have already lost two Welsh internationals to English clubs in Craig Quinnell (Saracens) and Jonathan Humphreys (Bath), while another, Neil Jenkins, is on the verge of rejoining Pontypridd.

Cardiff coach Rudy Joubert commented, "I don't want anyone to get the impression that Cardiff want players such as Rob and Neil to leave.

"I would like Rob and Neil to stay with the club, but if they were to move on we are pretty fortunate that we have talented young players such as Ryan Powell and Nicky Robinson coming through the ranks.

Wasps chief executive Alistair McLean said, "We have spoken to Cardiff about Robert Howley, but I am sure that a lot of other clubs have spoken to them as well and we are aware that Rob has a year remaining on his contract.

"Rob will do what he wants to do. If he wants to stay in Cardiff, he will and if he wants to leave, he will find a way to do so."
