Wilkinson can handle expectation
September 6, 2002

England and Newcastle Falcons star Jonny Wilkinson believes he can handle the pressure of a hectic international season and that of a demanding Premiership campaign.

Wilkinson, 23, will be an instrumental part of Clive Woodward's plans this season and on top of this the flyhalf has been awarded the captaincy of the Falcons. But Wilkinson has no qualms about taking on such a challenging dual role.

"I have always taken more responsibility for myself than has ever been put on me by either my club, or that which comes from playing at fly-half," he said. "And if I keep it that way, then I think I will be all right.

"If I strive to reach my own levels, and keep those higher than expectations from other parties, then I'll be okay. Hopefully, it will be me who is disappointed when other people aren't.

"There is a lot of pressure on me, but it is a case of having to amend my life to deal with that, which is always something I've managed before," he added.

"I will share the pressure among the guys as well. They will have to take some responsibility, because they are all relatively experienced players."

The Falcons edged out London Wasps in their opening game of the season and travel to Northampton Saints on Saturday.
