Contepomi to start for Shoguns
September 6, 2002

Bristol Shoguns head coach Peter Thorburn has selected Argentine international fly-half Felipe Contepomi in the starting line-up to face Wasps at Adams Park on Sunday.

The 25 year-old number 10, who replaces Australian Shane Drahm in the stand off position, will reform his half back partnership with countryman Agustin Pichot.

Apart from the change at half back Thorburn sticks with the same side that started the Zurich Premiership opener at home against Saracens last weekend.

Starting at loose head prop on Sunday will be Darren Crompton. Commenting on the official Bristol Shoguns website the England 'A' international said: "With what happened last Sunday, everyone is going to be that much more hungry this weekend. It wasn't the start to the season we wanted."

"We missed some tackles last week against Saracens and we've been focusing on defensive work this week. It's a question of getting everything in place so that it doesn't happen again," added Crompton.

Crompton has impressed Thorburn in pre-season and is currently first choice in the front row. The 29 year-old added: "There's great competition across the squad, especially in the back row and at centre. In fact, if you look at all the positions, there are a lot of boys available in those areas, it's the same at prop. There's Paul Johnstone, there's Emiliano and there's a lot of young guys like Richard Skuse.

"Everyone wants to play and it's nice to be named in the team. You sit around waiting for the team to be named and when you do hear your own name and you know you're playing then obviously it is a boost. We know how well we played at the end of last season and we just want to get that back."

Other changes to the 22 include the return of Zimbabwe international Paul Johnstone to the replacements bench. Former England international hooker Neil McCarthy misses out with the knee injury he picked up on the Club's tour of Ireland.
