Leeds keeping their feet on the ground
September 9, 2002

Despite their fine start to the Zurich Premiership season Leeds Tykes' Director of Rugby Phil Davies is refusing to get to carried away.

Wins over Leicester and London Irish in the first two games may have Leeds sitting third in the table.
Clearly the side has improved greatly over the summer - the introduction of the likes of Mark Regan George Harder and Diego Albanese, Jon Callard joining the coaching staff and Bram van Staraaten playing at the top of his game have all had an impact, but Davies is still looking for more from his side.

"We've got a long way to go in terms of the way we want to play the game. We are not panicking as much as we did last year, there is a lot more composure and shape about the team. There are a few more leaders who have been brought into the club and I am really pleased with where we are at the moment. We are only two games in and it will get harder not easier, but there is still more to come."

Davies' side demonstrated a hard edge in their win over London Irish on Sunday that was so often missing last season and although at times they failed to meet the quality of play produced in the win over Leicester they were able to keep the exiles at arms length.
"We all understood before the game that this would be, in effect, harder than last week," Davies explained. "It is always difficult to get up and play at the very top of your levels every week, but I thought we showed a lot of efficiency in the way we played and that was the most pleasing thing. I don't think we had the same urgency and edge we had against Leicester but nevertheless we still provided a very competent performance, as the scoreboard showed."
