Landmark looms for Stimpson
September 13, 2002

Leicester Tigers' stalwart Tim Stimpson is once kick away from becoming the first player to notch 1,000 Premiership points.

The fullback is sure to have the opportunity to take his 999 points tally past the landmark figure when the Tigers travel to the Sharks on Friday night in their latest Premiership clash.

Stimpson would have reached four figures unknowingly last weekend had he not failed to convert his own try against Harlequins.

"It was only when my mum mentioned afterwards that I'd have broken the 1,000-point barrier that I knew anything about it," Stimpson told the Daily Telegraph.

The fullback, 29, has crossed for 20 tries in his points haul but he is aware of his importance as the Tigers' goal-kicker.

"We all reach for the pigeon hole, Austin Healey is mercurial, Darren Garforth is a front-row gorilla and I'm...a goal-kicker."

But he is keen to omprove other areas of his game. "It's a big driving force for me," said Stimpson. "It's how you stay motivated - striving for improvement. I know that I have to make my entries into the line more dynamic and be quicker and sharper in all that I do. I know the headlines focus on my kicking but I get my satisfaction from all aspects."

Also, the Tigers have declared a profit of £644,000, the third year in succession that they have been in the black. No other club have recorded a profit in that time.
