Injured Mulder returns home
September 17, 2002

Zurich Premiership side Leeds Tykes have been dealt a blow with the news that Japie Mulder has returned to South Africa.

The veteran Springbok centre has returned home and prematurely ended his contract with the Yorkshire club due to an injured back.

Mulder, 33, who joined the Tykes last season, has slipped disc in his neck.

"The specialist that examined me said that it was something that just waited to happen after all the knocks I took over the years," he told Beeld. I previously had problems with my neck.

"I could have gone for an operation to fuse the disc, but then I would have been out of action for six months and would have returned with two months to go and with the need to get fit again.

"The other option was to return to South Africa and wait for the injury to recover by itself. When I made that decision I negotiated the end of my contract with Leeds.

"We agreed that I could return at the end of the year if I decided to do so," he added.
