England Saxons were crowned Barclays Churchill Cup champions for the fourth time in six years on a triple header day of international action at Toyota Park.

In front of a bumper crowd of 9,434, the Saxons beat Scotland A 36-19 to retain the main trophy, while Ireland A and Canada won the Plate and Bowl with 33-8 and 26-10 victories over Argentina A and USA respectively.

But it was England's day in the showpiece at the home of Chicago Fire Soccer as they twice came from behind to run in four tries, including one apiece for the tournament's Most Valuable Player Jordan Crane and top try scorer Matt Banahan, who finished on six touchdowns.

Fly-half Ryan Lamb contributed 16 points with the boot and Head Coach Steve Bates said: "This squad has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Today was a great all round team performance. By winning the tournament we've achieved what we set out to do and played some great rugby along the way.

"The Scots put in a very competitive performance and it took longer that we expected to break them down. But we stuck to our guns well and although it was a pretty even game for about an hour, we stepped it up after that."

Gordan Ross' own kicking - 14 points in total - had the Scots up early and his third penalty after Colin Gregor's second half try edged them ahead.

But unforced errors which resulted in turnovers enabled the Saxons to score two of their three second-half tries and enable them to turn a 16-9 half-time lead into a convincing victory.

Scotland A Head Coach Rob Moffat said: "We were probably seen as underdogs going into this game but we came here to win the Barclays Churchill Cup.

"The boys trained very well over the three weeks and performed well at times. We just weren't good enough on the day. There were two or three good chances today and we just didn't take them.

"Throughout the tour we have played the type of rugby that we wanted to play and I'm proud of the players for achieving that."

Meanwhile, Jonny Sexton inspired Ireland A to their third successive Plate victory with 18 points in a 33-8 triumph.

The fly-half collected a try, two conversions, two penalties and a dropped goal in a victory built on a 21-0 first-half blitz.

Man-of-the-match Sexton said: "It was a good way to end the tournament. We worked hard during the week and it clicked today. That's three Plate wins in a row so we have to go up a step next year. I didn't play that well in the first two games, but the management stuck with me and gave me another chance."

Ireland A captain Bob Casey added: "We are delighted with the effort we put in. You could see in the first half what we were trying to do and we could have had three or four more tries. In patches during this tournament we have shown the talent that is coming through in Irish rugby."

Replacement Gabriele Ascarate scored a try and Ignacio Mieres kicked a penalty in something of a second half recovery but it was never going to be enough.

Captain Juan Ignacio Gauthier, clearly disappointed with a fourth place finish, said: "It was very hard because we didn't have the ball in the first half and they scored a lot of points. We played better in the second half but they were just too far ahead.

"This competition was very important for us because we get to compete against professional players and although it was tough we learnt a lot."

North American bragging rights went to Canada who overturned a 10-0 deficit to storm home against USA with four second half tries, two apiece from flanker Nanyak Dala and centre Ryan Smith and three conversions from Ander Monro.

"We took it slowly in the first half and had to pump it up in the second. I think our fitness was a lot better than theirs and we started playing some rugby in the second half," said Dala.

"Kieran (Crowley) has been coaching us to get us trying to move 20 or 30 metres up field rather than just 10. He is getting us to think more about the game and that helps us get into the right positions to score tries."

Crowley's side also claimed the annual Can-Am trophy - played between the two countries since 1976.

And after his first win following defeats to Scotland A and Argentina A said: "We just beat another international side and you need to celebrate that and the hard work. We do need to get back to Victoria and get ready for the French Barbarians next weekend, but right now we will enjoy what we have achieved."

For US Coach Scott Johnson it was a third defeat since he took charge and he candidly reflected: "It boils down to one thing - it's clear that we haven't got the capacity to last the 80 minutes. They were spent at halftime. I have never seen a team that is leading 10-0 at half-time look so exhausted.

"All games we have competed in, but we can't play for that many minutes and not win any set pieces and expect to come out on top."
