Jersey have accepted a £5,000 fine and a two-point deduction from the RFU after fielding Ben Maidment for their opening league match of the season against Plymouth Albion.

After being sent off in a friendly against Coventry, Maidment was due to serve his suspension in the following pre-season game against Le Rheu, which eventually did not go ahead - information which Jersey failed to relay to the relevant officials.

By playing against Plymouth the RFU charged Maidment and the club with "failure to act towards the RFU with utmost good faith and/or conduct prejudicial to the interest of the Union and/or the Game", though the charge against the player has now been dropped.

Jersey chairman Bill Dempsey said: "We recognise that the case has highlighted some shortcomings in the club's internal controls and will be taking measures to remedy this situation.

"We are pleased that the charge against Ben Maidment was dropped, as we firmly believe he had done nothing wrong since his original offence in the match against Coventry."
