Kyle Stanley added his name to the list of up-and-coming American stars that includes Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson with an impressive breakthrough victory at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at the start of 2012.
Pegged as a star of the future after some promising finishes on tour in 2011 - notably second behind Steve Stricker at the John Deere Classic, and then third in the FedEx Cup playoff event the BMW Championship - Stanley went away over the winter and spent time in the gym to totally retune his body and golf swing.
That work looked to have reaped immediate dividends when he took a big lead at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, before a surprise collapse (including an eight at the 18th) saw him lose the event in a play-off. Hurt by that disappointment, Stanley then proved his real character by bouncing back to storm through the field and win at Sawgrass the very next week.
A powerful hitter - who isn't these days? - with a precise iron game but an inconsistent response under pressure, Stanley is one to watch over the next few years.
Career high: Bouncing back from a seemingly disastrous meltdown at Farmers Insurance Open to win his first PGA Tour event at the Waste Management Phoenix Open the very next week.
