Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson denies the club are close to signing Wesley Sneijder

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has poured cold water on a potential swoop for Wesley Sneijder, insisting there is "absolutely nothing at all" in reports claiming the club are set to make a £35 million bid for the Inter Milan star.

Sneijder has been the subject of speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford, but Ferguson denied the 27-year-old had agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions.

"I keep reading about this, there's absolutely nothing at all to that [reports of United's interest in the player]," he told ESPN Soccernet Press Pass. "First of all I don't think Inter are prepared to sell him anyway.

"You get conjecture and you get speculation every week in newspapers unfortunately. And we have to answer these for some reason - why, I don't know, but we have to find a reason without adding insult to any particular club, or embarrassing any particular player. There's nothing we can do about it."

Reports suggested United chief executive David Gill had travelled to Milan to put the finishing touches to a prospective deal, but the club have since denied those rumours, confirming Gill was in Zurich for a European Club Association meeting.

Sneijder is contracted to Inter until the summer of 2015 and has said he has no desire to seek a move away from Milan. However, many view him as the ideal replacement for the now retired Paul Scholes.
