Shock leader at the 2011 Open Championship, Tom Lewis, confessed he cannot even remember his five-under-par 65 that sees him level with Thomas Bjorn at the top of Thursday's leaderboard.

The 20-year-old became the first amateur since 1968 to lead The Open, chalking up four consecutive birdies along the back nine to propel himself into the headlines. Lewis, who was playing alongside the legendary Tom Watson, admits the final part of his round was something of a blur.

"I don't even know what's happened out there, I can't remember," said the youngster. "I saw my lead at 17, but I didn't realise I made birdies from 14-17. I guess when you're in the zone you don't realise."

Lewis has tasted success at Sandwich in the past, winning the British boys' title two years ago. This time, though, his efforts were appreciated by the gallery - which stood in parts to applaud the youngster's efforts.

"I didn't know if it was for me or the other Toms but it was excellent because you don't get that in amateur golf!" quipped Lewis.

A 20-foot putt at the 17th was one of the highlights of the youngster's round, before he made par at the last despite failing to find the green with his initial attempt. Lewis had the calming influence of Watson alongside him throughout, and he confessed it made a big difference.

"He was a great man to be with today, he was a great help. He didn't say too much because obviously he wanted to do his own thing. But when he did talk it was really nice of him to help me out and I'm thrilled to have played with him."
