Sotherton returns to heptathlon in race for London 2012

Kelly Sotherton has performed a stunning U-turn and returned to heptathlon in a bid to fulfil her London 2012 dream.

Sotherton, a bronze medallist in the event at the 2004 Olympics, was forced to switch to the 400m last year after a series of injury setbacks.

But after having had her funding cut by UK Athletics last week, Sotherton believes the heptathlon represents her best chance of securing a place next summer's Games, and is willing to put her body on the line and give it one last shot.

"I started training four weeks ago for the heptathlon and it's rejuvenated my feelings for the sport," Sotherton told Sky Sports News. "I'm more motivated and enjoying the fact that next summer I could be in the Olympic heptathlon."

Jessica Ennis is one of Team GB's biggest hopes for gold at London 2012, and Sotherton admits she does not expect to be challenging Ennis for medals.

"I don't think I'm going to be rivalling her, I possibly could have been a few years ago," she said. "I know where my limits lie, I am not striving for a gold medal - if the wind was blowing the right way and I get a light shot or there was no sand in the sandpit then I might [have a chance]!"
