Stoke City have submitted an appeal against the red card Rory Delap received during the Premier League side's FA Cup victory against Crawley on Saturday.

Delap was dismissed after just 17 minutes of the fifth round cup tie, after referee Mike Jones deemed his lunging tackle on David Hunt to be dangerous.

After the match manager Tony Pulis complained about the decision - despite goals from Jonathan Walters and Peter Crouch comfortably easing his side into the quarter-finals - and the club have now lodged a formal appeal against the red card and attached three-match ban.

"After studying television replays of the incident, City have now notified the Football Association that they will be appealing against the dismissal," a club statement read.

"The club now have 24 hours to present their evidence to the FA in the hope that the midfielder's three-match suspension will be overturned."
