Farah makes big statement with London win

Mo Farah fired a warning to his rivals ahead of London 2012 with a dominant 5000m victory on home soil at the Aviva London Grand Prix.

Competing in his last race before the Olympics, Farah made his move with two laps remaining and proved too strong for Australia's Collis Birmingham as he streaked to victory in 13 minutes and 06.04 seconds.

Another British athlete to stake their claim for an Olympic medal this summer was Perri Shakes-Drayton, who was hugely impressive as she destroyed a strong field to win the women's 400m hurdles. Despite the slippery conditions underfoot, Shakes-Drayton set a lifetime best of 53.77 - the second fastest performance by a British woman behind Sally Gunnell.

"I'm over the moon with the time," Shakes-Drayton told BBC Sport. "Today was an opportunity to race against the best girls. I thought to myself 'C'mon girl, pull your socks up.' I had to believe in myself. I had a very good day at the office today. It gives me confidence to know my training is going well."

World champion hurdler Dai Greene, who will captain the British track and field team at this summer's Olympic Games, continued to close the gap on world No. 1 Javier Culson.

Culson, unbeaten in the 400m hurdles this year, set a world-leading time of 47.78, but Greene, who struggled for form earlier in the season, was a strong second in 48.10, while team-mate Jack Green ran a personal best time of 48.60 to take fourth.

"I wanted a bit more," Greene admitted. "I would have loved to win in front of a home crowd. But I'll be continuing what I've done over the last few weeks - I've run faster than I did last year already."

Tyson Gay finished strongly to win the men's 100m in 10.03 seconds as the British trio of Dwain Chambers , Mark Lewis-Francis and Simeon Williamson failed to reach the final.

World silver medallist Hannah England struggled on her return to action as she finished 11th in the 1500m, while new UK champion Laura Weightman finished fourth with Lisa Dobriskey seventh.

Chris Tomlinson produced a season best leap of 8.26m to finish second in the long jump, while Lawrence Okoye took third place in the men's discus with a throw of 63.33m.
