Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United have tabled a bid for Arsenal forward Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman rocked Arsenal earlier in the month when confirming he would not sign a new contract, which has sparked a transfer frenzy.

Reports have suggested the Gunners have fielded offers from Manchester City, Juventus and United, and Ferguson has confirmed his club have thrown their hat in the ring.

"Obviously Arsenal have given out the fact that we've made a bid for him," Ferguson told MUTV. "We try to keep business as close as possible to us until the moment we conclude a deal.

"There's no point talking about something that might not happen.

"There are other clubs interested in the player. We've shown an interest and that's where we are at the moment."

It is being claimed Arsenal have reluctantly accepted to sell Van Persie, who has a year remaining on his deal, and are holding out for a fee in the region of £25 million.
