Brave Adlington back on the Olympic podium

Rebecca Adlington secured Team GB's second medal of London 2012 as the two-time Olympic champion claimed bronze in the women's 400m freestyle.

Adlington was the defending champion but only narrowly scraped into the final as eighth fastest qualifier, but produced a late charge from lane eight to climb onto the Olympic podium again as France's Camille Muffat claimed gold.

Adlington was in fourth place with 100m remaining, but finished strongly to finish in four minutes 03.01 behind USA's Allison Schmitt and new champion Muffat, who claimed a new Olympic record of 4:01.45.

"The crowd was so overwhelming. Twelve years' hard work has gone into that," Adlington said. "The 400m always feel so hard for me and they were so far ahead. I'm so glad I've got a medal at a home Games. Not many people can say that."

Having seen Hannah Miley miss out on a medal on the opening day, Team GB enjoyed some promising results in the pool at the Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

Liam Tancock produced an impressive semi-final performance to qualify third fastest for Monday's men's 100m backstroke final. Tancock clocked 53.25 seconds to finish second in his semi-final behind France's Camille Lacourt.

Gemma Spofforth qualified comfortably for the women's 100m backstroke final, while Robbie Renwick is through to the men's 200m freestyle final after finishing equal third in his semi-final.

Ellen Gandy finished eighth in the 100m butterfly final as American Dana Vollmer claimed gold in a world record time of 55.98 seconds.
