Kenny sets new Olympic record

Jason Kenny went some way to justifying his selection for the men's sprint by setting an Olympic record in qualifying.

New cycling rules mean only one competitor can represent each country and Kenny was in a straight fight with Sir Chris Hoy for the place in the team.

After a lot of agonising, Kenny was given the nod ahead of Hoy and he made a brilliant start to his bid for gold with a time of 9.713 seconds. The time lowered the mark of Hoy from Beijing in 2008 and proved his well-being for the event.

Frenchman Gregory Bauge is viewed as Kenny's key rival for gold but he was over 0.2 of a second behind the Brit's time, with the world champion clocking 9.952 seconds.

Ed Clancy made a fine start the omnium, the decathlon of the cycling world, as the Brit won the flying lap to take an early lead in the six-discipline competition.
