Liverpool defender Daniel Agger says he does not need time off to recover from a minor fracture in his kneecap and will continue to play despite the injury.

Agger, 27, has been plagued with injuries since arriving at Anfield in 2006 and has never started more than 25 Premier League games in a season for the Reds.

It was feared that after being stretchered off during last month's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United he would face another lengthy period on the sidelines, but the Denmark international's injury - caused by a collision with team-mate Glen Johnson - was not as bad as expected and he insists he can continue to play while carrying the problem.

"I feared the worst when it happened," Agger was quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo. "When I tried to get up the muscle in my knee just didn't work. I felt really unsteady and the medical staff thought I had done my ligaments.

"I thought it was a bad one and that I would be out for months. But, thankfully, it was just a really hard knock to the knee. I've got a small fracture in the bone but it's only a minor thing. It's not a problem. I only started training again last Friday but I was fine for the Norwich game.

"I felt really comfortable and I'm enjoying it. I think I deserved a bit of luck after the problems I've had in the past."

Agger believes Liverpool's 5-2 rout of Norwich, which was their first Premier League win of the season under new boss Brendan Rodgers, has improved confidence within the squad.

"We've played well like that in a number of games but the difference last Saturday was that we got the goals," he said. "We could have had even more because we created a lot of chances but five was enough. The win was good for confidence and we needed the three points.

"The only disappointment was the goals we conceded. That's something we definitely have to work on. It's always easier to win games if you keep a clean sheet. Even when we're playing good attacking football we have to be able to keep the back closed."
