Liverpool threw away a first-half lead as they were overturned by Udinese at Anfield, while Newcastle eased to victory against Bordeaux. On a mixed night for English clubs in the Europa League, Tottenham were frustrated by Panathinaikos.

Udinese's Antonio Di Natale masterminded a second-half fightback as Liverpool failed to maintain their winning start to their European campaign with a 3-2 defeat.

The Reds looked to be on course for victory when they took the lead through Jonjo Shelvey after 23 minutes but dangerman Di Natale equalised just 35 seconds into the second-half.

The Udinese captain then swung in a free-kick which Sebastian Coates nodded into his own net, and the Italian side completed an impressive turnaround two minutes later when Di Natale released Giovanni Pasquale, whose stunning 25-yard strike beat Pepe Reina.

Substitute Luis Suarez pulled one back for Liverpool, and both he and Raheem Sterling had chances to snatch a point, but the Reds were left to rue a host of wasted chances as they suffered a sobering defeat.

There were no such problems for Newcastle, who leapfrogged Bordeaux at the top of Group D with a comfortable 3-0 win over the French side.

Shola Ameobi put the Magpies in front after 16 minutes after good work down the left from Gabriel Obertan. Newcastle were gifted a second after Henrique diverted Danny Simpson's cross into his own net, and Papiss Cisse appeared to be offside when he swept home Shane Ferguson's cross for the third.

Tottenham were forced to settle for a second successive draw after they were held 1-1 by Panathinaikos.

Spurs arrived in Athens flying high after their victory at Manchester United on Saturday, but they failed to make the most of their dominance as Michael Dawson's opener was cancelled out by Jose Toche's 77th-minute equaliser.

Handed the captain's armband by Andre Villas-Boas, Dawson rewarded his manager's trust with an early goal, rising highest to glance in Tom Huddlestone's curling free-kick from the left.

But despite dominating possession, Spurs' hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition suffered a setback as Toche raced onto a superb throughball from Giourkas Seitaridis to poke the ball past Hugo Lloris.
