Nile Ranger convicted of assault

Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger has been given a 12 month conditional discharge after being convicted of assaulting two police officers in August of last year.

The forward was also ordered to pay £750 to each officer, but was cleared of two counts of actual bodily harm at a hearing at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday.

Ranger, 21, joined the Magpies on a free transfer in 2009 after being released by Southampton for persistent bad behaviour - which included stealing kit belonging to the first team.

The former England youth international had loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley last season, and is under contract with the club until 2016 after signing a five and a-half-year extension in December 2010.

The latest charge is the most recent in a long list of incidents involving Ranger, which include instances of criminal damage and being drunk and disorderly. Ranger also received an FA charge in March of this year for using homophobic language on social networking site Twitter.

With Newcastle keen to relocate the striker permanently - manager Alan Pardew recently confirmed at a fans dinner that the striker will not play for the Magpies under his stewardship.
