Oxlade-Chamberlain out of Schalke match

Arsene Wenger has revealed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss Wednesday's champions League clash with Schalke after picking up an injury against Norwich.

Arsenal were stunned 1-0 by the Canaries after Grant Holt netted a 19th-minute winner at Carrow Road. Defeat leaves the Gunners 10 points off Premier League pace-setters Chelsea.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was introduced as a 65th-minute substitution but had to be replaced nine minutes later after taking a knock to the hip. Wenger says the home game with Schalke will come too soon.

"It was a kick on his hip. It is not long-term but he will be out for Wednesday," Wenger told ESPN.

The Arsenal boss also confirmed Kieran Gibbs will miss the European encounter, saying: "I don't see anyone new being [back] for Wednesday night. The closest will be Gibbs but he will not be ready. [Theo] Walcott will not be ready [either]."

Arsenal saw the return of Jack Wilshere to their bench at Norwich after a 14-month spell of inactivity for the injury-troubled midfielder. Wenger did not introduce the youngster, though, insisting the game was too "intense".

"We have to be conscious he has not played for 14 months. I would have brought him on if the game had allowed it today, but it was too intense. He will play on Monday with the reserves and then we will see where we go from there. He needs games."

As for his side's performance, Wenger hinted at a belief that his players underestimated Norwich. The Frenchman stopped short of attacking his players, but the look of dissatisfaction was evident.

"I hope it will have a positive impact. It was a shock to the system today. You have to give credit to Norwich. They played well and were completely committed and they deserved the win.

"Maybe we underrated the difficulty we would face. But the Premier League is the Premier League. If you are not ready for the fight then you will always have bad surprises. There is a big difference between the amount of possession we had and the amount of chances we created. That is down to the fact that Norwich defended well and we did not create a lot."
