Bradley Wiggins has been awarded a podium finish at the 2009 Tour de France after Lance Armstrong's result was scrubbed from the record books.

Wiggins won the Tour in 2012, but he had his breakthrough in the race when claiming fourth behind Alberto Contador, Andy Schleck and Armstrong in 2009.

Armstrong's fall from grace on account of doping revelations saw his seven successive wins in the race between 1999 and 2005 deleted and the UCI has ruled that his comeback years, in 2009 and 2010, are to be removed as well.

The seven Tour wins have been declared void races but the comeback races will be reallocated, meaning Wiggins will be prompted to third.

A UCI spokesperson told Press Association Sport: "In 2009 the placing of Mr Armstrong will be reallocated. Bradley Wiggins is the third-placed rider for the Tour de France, 2009."
