Werner: Suarez will stay and Reds will buy in January

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has insisted the club have no desire to sell talismanic striker Luis Suarez.

Suarez, 25, has played in all 12 Premier League games for the Reds this season, scoring 10 of his side's 17 goals to date and adding a further two assists. But the Uruguayan was driven to stress his commitment to the Anfield club last week, after reports emerged that Manchester City were considering a £40 million January bid from the striker.

And the Liverpool hierarchy have now also responded to those reports, with Werner insisting that the club are keen to keep Suarez for at least the duration of his current contract - which runs to 2017.

"Absolutely not," Werner said, according to The Telegraph, when asked if the club would consider selling Suarez. "He's a beautiful player to watch and, as a Liverpool fan, I hope I'm watching him for many years to come.

"We made a long-term contract with him in the summer and we are going to see a lot of his play at Liverpool."

Keeping the likes of Suarez at Anfield in the long-term could require significant investment in other areas of the squad, with Brendan Rodgers' side already eight points off the final Champions League qualification spot at this early stage of the season.

And Werner confirmed that the owners intend to give Rodgers money to spend in January - and future transfer windows - in order to make the squad competitive with the best sides in the division.

"Our intention is to strengthen but actions will speak louder than words," he said. "We are playing better and better each week. Obviously, we have made some mistakes in the past but our intention is to deliver, strengthen the squad and move forward.

"We know that January is a challenging time and I don't want to say we've got x or y but, hopefully, the fans will be pleased with what we do accomplish."
