Rafael Nadal returned to the tennis court for the first time in more than five months as he started his preparations for the 2013 season on an indoor court in Mallorca.

Nadal, who has not been seen since his shock second-round defeat to Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June, completed his first training session under the watchful eye of his coach Toni Nadal in his home town of Manacor.

The French Open champion is hoping to be back to full fitness after in time for the Australian Open in January after recovering from a partial tear of the patellar tendon.

"Hi all, today my first tennis practice after all these weeks," Nadal posted on his Facebook page. "Getting better and hope to continue with the positive trend."

Having been forced to pull out of the defence of his Olympic crown, Nadal also missed the US Open, the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals as well as Spain's Davis Cup final defeat to Czech Republic at the weekend.
