Roma fans behind Spurs attack handed five-year bans

The two men arrested for their involvement in the attack on a group of Tottenham fans in Rome last week have been handed five-year bans from all football grounds in Italy.

Francesco Ianiari and Mauro Pinnelli were quickly identified thanks to witness statements and images taken by CCTV cameras in the area and were charged with aggravated assault after leaving three Spurs fans seriously injured - including Ashley Mills, who remains in hospital recovering from a stab wound to his thigh.

It was initially thought the incident was connected to the Europa League fixture against Lazio, given the well documented far-right leanings of the Biancocelesti. However, the two men were proven to be Roma fans and it appears the attack was orchestrated by participants in an extremist rally held in the capital last Friday.

A statement released on Thursday said that the superintendent of Rome, Fulvio Della Rocca, had "considered the circumstances of the facts" before issuing the five-year banning order against the pair.
