Manchester United have been handed a welcome boost with the news Nemanja Vidic took part in a full training session ahead of a possible return to action on Wednesday.

The Serbian defender has been sidelined since undergoing a knee operation in September, but he could be in line for a return against CFR-Cluj in the Champions League on Wednesday.

With United already guaranteed top spot in their group, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to shuffle his pack and it will hand him the chance to get some minutes into Vidic ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Ferguson's side top the table heading into December and the Old Trafford chief feels keeping his defensive stars free from injury could be key.

"We've managed Rio Ferdinand very well," Ferguson told Inside United. "Rio is doing a lot of work throughout the week to get himself ready for games.

"If we can keep Chris Smalling and Phil Jones fit along with Rio and Jonny Evans - we'll see how Nemanja Vidic gets on - we'll have a far better chance."
