January exit not out of the question for Lampard

Frank Lampard has admitted he could leave Chelsea in January, as the club have not opened any talks with him about a contract extension.

Lampard, 33, is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer - and able to speak to other clubs about a free transfer on January 1. Clubs including Monaco, Guizhou Renhe and even Premier League sides ranging from Manchester United and QPR have been linked with a bid.

The attacking midfielder gave a timely reminder of his value to the Blues on Sunday, as he scored twice in the 2-1 Premier League victory over Everton - moving him to 192 goals for the club, one shy of the club's second all-time leading goalscorer, Kerry Dixon.

But Lampard acknowledged that he might not even remain at the club long enough to beat Dixon's mark, with his future up in the air.

"I'm only one behind so hopefully I'll beat that, but you never should count your chickens," Lampard told the BBC. "At the minute there is nothing been said and my contract's till the summer.

"I'm enjoying playing, I'm working hard in training, I'm loving being part of the team and the ability we've got in the team.

"That's all I can tell you at the minute, and that's fair enough for me, I'm happy just to keep playing well and contributing to winning games."

Asked whether Chelsea had held any discussions with him about a possible extension, Lampard replied: "No."

While a January departure would appear unlikely, manager Rafael Benitez would not speak about the player's future beyond the summer - having revealed the England international would not receive a new contract in one of his first press conferences as interim Chelsea boss.

"Lampard is a great player, a good professional, who is doing well for us and I will try to bring the best out of him until the end of the season," said Benitez.

"He is one of the players who if he gets in the box he can be dangerous.

"He is under contract. He has shown his full commitment. He is a great player and my job is to keep him fit, happy and scoring goals.

"If he can score goals every game I'll be pleased."
