Steven Gerrard has said he would love to see Wesley Sneijder join Liverpool and believes the Netherlands playmaker would be a superb signing for them.

Sneijder, 28, is surplus to requirements at Inter Milan, and Galatasaray have submitted a €7.5 million offer for the former Real Madrid midfielder, but the player has been stalling on the move amid suggestions he is reluctant to move to Turkey.

There were even reports in the Italian press that Sneijder had offered to accept a pay-cut to stay at Inter, and the player held a meeting with club president Massimo Moratti on Sunday. Afterwards, Moratti said that there is a "small chance Sneijder could stay" but that he believed he was closer to a move to Galatasaray.

Liverpool have long been touted as an alternative destination, but manager Brendan Rodgers has played down talk that they would be interested in the 2010 Champions League winner. Gerrard, though, would be delighted to see him move to Anfield.

The Liverpool and England skipper admitted Sneijder's salary could be a stumbling block - he earns a reported £6.5 million a year after tax at Inter - but hopes he would be willing to reduce his wages to sign for the Merseysiders.

He told Sky Sports: "He is a top player. We have seen that at every major tournament he delivers. I'd love nothing better than to see him in a red shirt. If Brendan wants him, we'd love to welcome him. I think he'd be a fantastic player for Liverpool."

Liverpool's policy is to sign younger players on lower wages and with a higher resale value but manager Rodgers has said there are times when he would like to add more experienced footballers. Sneijder captains his country and has won 90 caps, besides winning league titles in the Netherlands, Spain and Italy.

Gerrard said he was heartened by the £12 million purchase of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea and would like to see Rodgers add another two players to his squad.

He added: "The Daniel Sturridge signing was a great signing. [I would like] another two more: a defender because we have got an injury at the moment to [Jose] Enrique and we may need a little bit more cover; and maybe a No. 10 or an attacking-type player who can play out wide."
