Groves has eyes on Froch after joining Matchroom

George Groves has his eyes trained on world titles after striking a deal to fight under the Matchroom banner.

Groves took the decision to split from promoter Frank Warren at the weekend, which saw the postponement of a fight with Mohamed Ali Ndiaye for the European title.

It would appear Groves has his sights trained on world rather than European titles and the Brit will take his first step on the path to the top of the tree when he takes on Dario German Balmaceda on Saturday.

"I am really excited," Groves told Sky Sports News. "It is a great move for me. I am excited about boxing this Saturday.

"My boxing has done well, I have been in some great fights but profile-wise it would have been nice to be a bit more busy.

"Hopefully in the near future I can become a world champion."

Groves is in the dark about his opponent on Saturday, as he said: "I can tell you absolutely nothing. I know as much about him as anyone else does. It does not bother me who I am fighting this weekend, it is about keeping busy. I have had a fantastic training camp and am feeling fit and healthy and can't wait to get back in the ring."

Bigger challenges lie ahead and Groves, provided he beats Balmaceda at the weekend, will feature on the undercard to Carl Froch's showdown with Mikkel Kessler on May 25 at the 02 Arena in London.

"It will be a huge night," he said. "The last time I fought at the 02 it was heaving and I am excited to be back there boxing on a massive night."

And it would appear Groves will have a close look at the main event. He said: "Froch and Kessler are super-middleweight champions, I am a super-middleweight and I have my eye on them. I would love to have a crack at the winner.

"Carl is a great fighter, a great ambassador and a world champion. I want to be a world champion and to do that I will have to fight these guys.

"Carl is one of the names that has come up. Two Brits getting together in the ring for a world title would be a huge fight.

"In an ideal world I would get a title on my own and then fight Carl in a unification clash down the line.

"We have Arthur Abraham fighting Robert Stieglitz in a couple of weeks. I am No. 1 contender for that so hopefully I will get a shot at the winner."
