A host of seeded players made it safely through the first round of the WTA Nurnberger Versicherungscup on Tuesday, though top seed Jelena Jankovic will have to wait after poor weather ended her match early in Germany, with the Serbian leading Arantxa Rus by a single set.

Rain hampered the inaugural edition of the tournament for the second day running, but most matches were completed, including third seed Alize Cornet's win over Pauline Parmentier 6-3 6-4 in an all-French clash.

Fourth seed Julia Georges edged past Alexandra Cadantu 6-4 7-5, while fifth ranked Lucie Safarova got the better of Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2 7-6 (9-7).

Lourdes Dominguez, seeded sixth, disposed of Colombia's Mariana Duque-Marino 7-5 6-3 before eighth seed Annika Beck beat Nina Bratchikova 6-2 6-2.

Elsewhere, Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor will face Safarova after the Spaniard edged Teliana Pereira 4-6 6-4 6-4 while Mandy Minella also needed three sets against Jessica Pegula, coming through 7-5 4-6 6-3.

Italy's Karin Knapp came from behind to beat Dinah Pfizenmaier 2-6 7-6 (7-0) 7-5 and Alexandra Panova's tournament was ended by Galina Voskoboeva 6-2 6-2, while Julia Cohen beat Tereza Smitjkova 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.
