Hull to become youngest ever Solheim Cup player

Charley Hull will become the youngest player in Solheim Cup history after European captain Lotta Neumann selected the 17-year-old as one of her wildcard picks.

Hull has been rewarded for her five runner-up finishes in six events this season, and is joined by fellow Englishwoman Jodi Ewart Shadoff, Sweden's Caroline Hedwall and Italy's Giulia Sergas as Neumann's choices.

"Lotta was my captain at the Junior Solheim Cup two years ago so she knows my game well," said Hull.

"When she told me, I tried to keep my cool but I was just so happy."

Swede Suzann Pettersen, Spain's Carlota Ciganda, Scot Catriona Matthew and Germany's Caroline Masson all qualified through the Ladies European Tour points for holders Europe, while Sweden's Anna Norqvist, Frenchwoman Karine Icher and Spaniards Azahara Munoz and Beatriz Recari made the team through the world rankings.

The squad includes six rookies and five players from the victorious team at Killeen Castle in Ireland two years ago, but there is no place for the most experienced player in Solheim Cup history, Laura Davies.

Neumann said: "It's always difficult when you come down to this. It's hard to talk to some of the players who are not on the team, that's really the hard part.

"On the other hand I am super excited about the four picks that I made. They are very happy and our team is happy. I am very confident at this moment.

"I feel that Charley is playing fearless golf. You look at her stats, she shoots in the 60s about 30% of the time which is pretty good, she has finished runner-up five times on the European Tour, she's a strong player and she brings to our team what we are looking for.

"She has a lot of energy, she's a long hitter which is going to be great for Colorado. It's quite generous off the tees and we are playing up at altitude and the ball will fly. I think she can bring a lot of great things for our team and I am very excited about her.

"It's been so difficult for us every time we have been over there. The crowds are hard. If this team can mentally prepare for this, I really believe this team can do it."

For the US, Michelle Wie has been handed a place on the team as one of Meg Mallon's captain's picks.

It is the second time in the last three Solheim Cups that Wie has been a captain's pick. Wie's record in the last two Cups is 4-3-1, with Mallon opting for her experience over Jennifer Johnson.

Mallon also gave a wild card to Solheim Cup rookie Gerina Piller.

The American team was completed on Sunday at St Andrews with Morgan Pressel tying for fourth to knock Johnson from the last of two world ranking spots.

Women's British Open winner Stacy Lewis led the US standings to qualify for her second straight team. Lewis is joined by fellow points qualifiers Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Jessica Korda, Lexi Thompson, Angela Stanford, Brittany Lincicome and Brittany Lang.

Lizette Salas qualified for the first time from the world rankings.

The Solheim Cup takes place from August 16-18 at Colorado Golf Club. Laura Davies will take no part for the first time since the matches began in 1990.

The USA have eight wins in the competition to Europe's four, with Europe bidding to win consecutive Cups and on US soil both for the first time.
