Maria Sharapova was the highest-paid female athlete in the world in the year ending June 2013 according to the annual report published by Forbes.

Sharapova earned £18.8 million in prize money, endorsements and appearance fees, and in the year she also launched her own sweets, known as Sugarpova, in 15 countries .

Serena Williams was second on the list, having to make do with a paltry £13.3 million which was split between prize money (£5.5 million) and endorsements (£7.8 million).

China's Li Na is third on the list with less than 20% of her £11.8 million income coming from prize money.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus is at No. 4 with £10.2 million, but unlike Na the bulk of her money (£4.5 million) comes from winnings, and her winnings of £5.15 in the calendar year of 2012 was a record for a female tennis player in any one year.

The domination by tennis stars is broken by NASCAR driver Danica Patrick (£9.7 million) who earns almost all her cash from endorsements. South Korean world champion figure skating champion Kim Yuna is at No. 6.

Caroline Wozniacki, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic and golfer Paula Creamer make up the top ten.
