Wayne Rooney has been included in England's squad to face Scotland next week despite his recent injury problems, while Rickie Lambert has been handed his first international call-up by Roy Hodgson.

Rooney has yet to make a single appearance for Manchester United during their pre-season campaign due to hamstring and shoulder injuries.

However, Hodgson has kept faith in the forward, who has recently attracted two failed bids from Chelsea, having been unable to call on West Ham's Andy Carroll due to a heel problem.

Alongside Rooney, Lambert has been given the chance to impress in attack by the England boss. The 31-year-old had never played in the Premier League until last season, but caught the eye with some impressive displays for Southampton, hitting 15 goals in total.

Elsewhere, Wilfried Zaha returns to the senior squad after making his debut last November against Sweden. The United man featured for the Under-21s at the European Championship this summer.

Captain Steven Gerrard and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere also return to the international fold having missed the friendlies at the end of last season against Ireland and Brazil.

There is also a space for fit-again Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy, who was ruled out for much of last season with injury.

England take on Scotland in a friendly at Wembley on August 14 in preparation for next month's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
