Fenerbahce expelled from European competitions

Fenerbahce have been removed from the Europa League and banned from next season's Champions League as part of a match-fixing case.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had allowed the Turkish side to complete a two-legged Champions League qualifier against Arsenal, which they lost 5-0 on aggregate, while their appeal was considered.

But their original two-year UEFA ban was upheld after club officials were judged to have helped fix matches in order to win the 2011 Super Lig title.

In an official statement, the court said: "Pursuant to the UEFA decision, which is now confirmed by the CAS, Fenerbahce is excluded from two editions of the UEFA club competitions.''

A decision on who will replace Fenerbahce in the group stage of the competition will be made in Monaco on Thursday by UEFA's emergency panel and chaired by president Michel Platini.

Metalist Kharkiv's expulsion was also confirmed by the CAS, with full details to follow of a case involving domestic league matches.

The Ukrainian side also participated in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, but were replaced by PAOK Thessaloniki after the verdict.
