Rooney faces no FA action over McCarthy clash

Wayne Rooney will not face any punishment from the Football Association following his controversial clash with Wigan's James McCarthy at the weekend.

The Manchester United forward produced a fine display in the 4-0 win over Wigan, scoring one goal and creating another, but his performance was overshadowed by a clash with McCarthy.

The pair came together in the centre circle and Rooney caught McCarthy with his arm. Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was outraged, claiming Rooney should have seen red, and the England striker woke up on Monday morning to newspaper headlines claiming he was staring at a suspension.

An FA probe hinged on Mark Clattenburg's report and the referee confirmed he had seen the incident and was content with how he had dealt with it on the field at the time - when he awarded Wigan a free kick.

United face Chelsea in a huge Premier League clash with Chelsea on Tuesday and Rooney will be available to Sir Alex Ferguson.
