Anne Keothavong produced another superb display to defeat Karolina Sprem 6-4 6-3 in the WTA Cellular South Cup.

Keothavong is feeling her way back to full fitness following a knee injury and her run in Memphis will do her confidence a world of good. She was impressive against Michelle Larcher de Brito on Wednesday and was equally as good against Sprem.

Keothavong converted all four of the break points she earned and wrapped up victory in an hour and 11 minutes to move into the semi-finals, where she will face Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson who upset second seed Melanie Oudin 6-1 6-3.

However, Elena Baltacha was unable to emulate Keothavong's success, falling to top seed Maria Sharapova 6-2 7-5. The British No. 1 was thoroughly outplayed in the opening set, winning just three points on Sharapova's serve, but held her nerve in the second, breaking the former world No. 1 on three occasions.

Baltacha was only able to hold her own service game twice, and Sharapova moves into the semi-finals where she will face Petra Kvitova, who beat third seed Kaia Kanepi 1-6 6-3 7-6(0).

In the men's section, top seed Andy Roddick served up ten aces as he beat Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6(2) 6-4. He will now face fellow American Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals after the world No. 31 defeated Leonardo Mayer 6-4 6-0.

No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych was too good for Michael Russell, while Ivo Karlovic completed a straight-sets victory over Xavier Malisse. Jeremy Chardy retired when 7-6 2-1 down to Lukas Lacko.
