One DRS detection in Valencia
The FIA has confirmed that there will be two DRS zones but only one activation point in Valencia for this weekend's European Grand Prix.
As was the case in Canada, the two zones are in place on consecutive straights, although there is more of a gap between the pair in Valencia. The detection point is before turn eight, meaning drivers will cross the bridge before being able to activate the system 285 metres after turn ten.
The second activation point comes following the complex of turns 12, 13 and 14, with drivers being able to reactivate the system 35 metres after turn 14. The significance of there being only one detection point is that it means only the car following at that stage can use the DRS. If they successfully make an overtake before the second activation point then they can still use the system to pull away in the second zone.
The similarity to Canada will not please championship leader, who said after the Canadian Grand Prix that the double zone had made overtaking too straightforward.
"In the end you have to be careful about how big you create the zone because obviously it can make overtaking too easy, like I think it was in Canada," he told ESPNF1 in exclusive interview. "If you are right behind and you open the wing then the other guy has no chance to defend, which is surely not the idea. But we are playing around and it is a new system. We are still early in the season and everybody is still learning with it."
