Profile

New Zealand born centre Sonny Parker moved to Wales to play for Pontypridd and then the Celtic Warriors, gaining his first Wales cap against Romania in 2002 after qualifying through residency. Parker was an important part of the 2003 Wales World Cup squad, making three appearances during the group stages.

He scored a try in the heroic loss to New Zealand, but was injured in the process of scoring and ruled out of the quarter final with England. He continued to hold down a place in the Wales squad, playing in the narrow 26-25 defeat to New Zealand in 2004, but played no part in Wales' Grand Slam in 2005 due to the outstanding form of Gavin Henson and Tom Shanklin.

Parker returned to the Wales team for the Autumn Internationals against Fiji and South Africa, before starting in the thrilling win over Australia at the Millennium Stadium. Immediately after this game, Parker announced his international retirement to concentrate on his club career with the Ospreys.

A year later he was convinced to come out of retirement by Gareth Jenkins, playing in Wales' Autumn Internationals and the 2007 Six nations before making the cut for the Wales World Cup squad. Parker scored a try in the opening game against Canada, and also featured in the loss to Australia at the Millennium Stadium.

He retained his squad place for the 2008 Six Nations under new Wales coach Warren Gatland, starting the opening match against England before making two further appearances from the bench against Scotland and Italy.
