After failing to make an impact in his native South Africa, Kruger upped sticks for England and Northampton Saints in 2008. An athletic, powerful lock, he made a major mark with the Saints as they reasserted themselves as a Premiership power. In 2010, after two seasons, Kruger returned to South Africa with the Bulls. He was not used for the following Super Rugby season but made the Currie Cup squad, stepping up a level 12 months later following the retirement of Victor Matfield. In June 2012 there was further reward as he was named alongside fellow new cap Eben Etzebeth in the South Africa second-row for a Test against England in Durban.
