Blues win title with extra-time 'golden point'

The Blues survived a nail-biting final against the ACT Brumbies to lift the World Club 10s trophy in Singapore.

The clash between the Super Rugby rivals went right to the wire, with the Blues snatching a 10-5 victory deep into the second period of extra time.

The Brumbies went in front in the sixth minute with Conrad Hoffmann touching down for the opening try. But the Blues fought back in the second half of the 20-minute match, opening their try-count through a Tom McCartney score.

With the scores level at 5-5, the match went into 'golden-point' extra time and it was the Blues who struck first, crossing the whitewash via Jackson Willison to lift the 10s title.

It was the Brumbies' first defeat of the two-day tournament denied them a second international title in 12 months after winning the London club sevens last year.

The Asia-Pacific Dragons, made up of players from the Southern hemisphere, beat Cardiff Blues 26-17 to finish third. London Welsh were defeated 14-28 by the Samoa Water President's 10 in the plate final, while the Italian outfit Petrarca Rugby finished seventh, overcoming Biarritz 12-5.
